"Don't intermarry with them - don't give your daughter to his son, and don't take his daughter for your son. For he will turn your children away from following me." Dvarim (Deuteronomy) 7:3,4 CJB
At that time, God was talking about the children of Israel intermarrying with the surrounding nations. The surrounding nations such as the Moabites, the Edomites, the Ammonites, the Canaanites, etc, were nations that had different kinds of pagan practices. They would bow down to idols, sacrifice their own children in fire, practice orgies, among other practices that have never been requested by God in the Bible. This command, however, didn't apply only to Israel at that time, but applies to everyone who is a part of Israel in flesh and in Spirit; to everyone who is a faithful follower of God. So this command applies to all of us as well.
You might say that those nations that surrounded Israel today aren't the nations that we see in our time. However, as time has transpired, many traditions have been passed on through generations, with slight modifications, but still remain in essence the same. As well as new acquired practices and traditions. Many if not all of these practices that exist nowadays aren't Bible based. So the reason that God gave this law for Israel back then and why it is applicable to us today remains the same: so we don't turn away from God on account of our spouse.
This is why, when entering a relationship, it is important that one must make sure that that person has a heart after God just as you do and shares the same Biblical principles as you do. That will allow a couple to be of one mind and therefore be able to guide their household to one main objective: Salvation in Yeshua the Messiah.
May God bless your future home with your future spouse, and to those who already have built their home with their significant other, may God prosper you and protect your home from all evil.
